IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR…
I absolutely love Christmas time; I still get just as excited about it as I did when I was little! Obviously the build up is the best part, and Joe and I both love to do festive things together to really get in the spirit of Christmas! This year was no exception, and we decided to take a trip to Birmingham for the weekend to do a spot of last minute present shopping and to visit the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market!
Birmingham’s is one of the largest authentic German Christmas markets outside of Germany and Austria. Its made up of traditional craft and gift stalls, tempting food stalls – from pretzels, bratwursts and roasted almonds, to chocolate covered fruit and garlic bread, you name it! – and pubs selling beer (by the double pint!), mulled wine and hot chocolate.
It’s nowhere near the scale of what Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is now, but I quite liked that because it’s more welcoming with an authentic Christmas charm. We really did feel like we were in Germany or somewhere like that when we visited, especially with the city’s tram line running right by the market, which felt strangely out of place to see in the UK! We had a good mooch around the stalls, then soaked up the festive atmosphere whilst having a drink and enjoying the live music.
Our timing couldn’t have been better because the Coca-Cola truck also happened to be making its stop in the city next to the Bullring shopping centre that weekend! People were queuing all day to get a photo next to it, which I thought was mad considering how chilly it was, but I guess its presence really did feel like Christmas had officially arrived!
We ended our evening with dinner at Buffalo & Rye, and American diner at Bennett’s Hill. It’s a meat lovers dream, with the menu covering off big burgers, gourmet dogs and pit-smoked meats! Joe went for a buffalo brisket burger with a side of chicken wings (as you do) whilst I had the most amazing slow smoked pulled pork burger with parmesan and truffle oil fries – my mouth is watering just thinking back to it now! Then, of course, we had to finish off with a classic American-style milkshake each.
The market is running until 29th December, but it’s a yearly event in the city so I would definitely recommend paying a visit next year if you haven’t already. We had a really lovely weekend and returned feeling more festive than ever – We even played our Christmas Spotify playlist for most of the drive home!
Have a very Merry Christmas everyone, I can’t wait to properly kick-off my blogging again in the New Year, and who knows I might even try my hand at a bit of vlogging too!
